We can’t talk about grief without talking about rage, shame and guilt.
Unfortunately, grief doesn’t always come alone. It sometimes comes with the unfairness of it all. The infuriating tragedy of not being able to hold on to those we love forever. Overnight, life can become a disappointing contract we’ve been forced into. One in which the terms and conditions shockingly state that, wherever there is love there will be loss. How unfair. How enraging. When this rage has nowhere to go, it tends to turn inwards. We experience it as shame. We judge ourselves for all the things we didn’t do or say (or for all the things we DID do or DID say and wish to take back). And then the guilt takes over. And now we have to live with so many unspoken words burning in our throat. And now we have to live with the thought that maybe, just maybe, things would have played out differently if we had done something better. And we get angry at ourselves. And the cycle of rage, shame and guilt begins all over again. To say this cycle is overwhelming is an understatement. And certainly no way to live. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be this way. This cycle doesn’t have to be an inevitability of grief.
